Tlēcan

Ranked #3 best bar in North America and #20 worldwide by Perrier “World’s Best Bar” Competition

The Objective

Design a brand celebrating mezcal, a traditional Mexican spirit, within one of Mexico City's most iconic neighborhoods, La Colonia Roma. The brand needed to honor the ancestral cultures that shaped the region: first the Teotihuacan civilization, then the Aztec empire, creating a contemporary experience rooted in ancient ritual.

The Solution

Fire became our central concept. Just as fire transforms agave into mezcal through ancestral processes, it became the metaphor connecting past to present. This led us to the name Tlecan: "place of fire" in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs.

The space architecture draws from two distinct influences: the atmospheric depth of pre-Hispanic tombs and the clean lines of Mexico City's modernist movement. For the interiors, we commissioned Tezontle Estudio to create a sculptural interpretation of the Disc of Death, a Mesoamerican Classic Period piece whose geometric sophistication and simplicity embody the timeless design language we sought throughout the project.
